LP Puzzle’N Desu Part 9 [Mind Rape] Vectorform – Surface Math + Games
Jan 112009

This game was developed for the original Game Boy. It was released in Japan in July, 1996 and in the US in February, 1997. It is a fantastic example of a “logic puzzle” game. It has some similarity to the Japanese game “Sokoban” or a US translation called “Rush Hour” sold by the toy company Think Fun. It also comes close to The Learning Company’s “Logical Journey of the Zoombinis” CD-ROM title.

Mole Mania is made up of 8 different levels, each more challenging than the previous level. Each level has many smaller logic puzzles or mini-games to be solved. These screens have a start and an end point, each containing a number of obstacles that need to be move, removed, used in some way, or altered. The main character of this game, a mole named Muddy, can also tunnel underground to navigate around some obstacles, but the answer is not always clear how best to navigate above and below ground to solve any puzzle.

This Game Boy title has so much thought behind it. It’s a timeless game and remains one of my all-time favorites. This video shows the set-up story, a number of the first level mini-games, and completion of the first level.

    That is the problem …
That is the problem about the monochrome Game Boy Compact Video Game System library. Either the system has low memory capacities for other more engaging genres of games (ie action-adventure or shooter) or most game companies can’t be bothered and just focus on making puzzle games for that handheld instead.

    This game never did …
This game never did catch much attention, because most gamers back then preferred home console gaming more than handheld gaming. Also, due to the original Game Boy having a dirty, blurry, green screen, people wanted color, as well as the best graphics the Game Boy can offer, but gameplay is more important than graphics. This game’s been staying in the dark ever since its release, so I wish that there was a Virtual Console that has Game Boy game downloads.

The nature of the brain is similar body muscles in many ways. If it is stimulated and made to work, it gets stronger and if it is not used it gets weaker. However care should be taken to not over stimulate it. Just as over training a muscle leads to injuries, stimulating the brain beyond its capacity might impair its strength.
