I think we try to diversify too much. We should decide which topics are really essential for each grade level, and stress those. It would be better for students to get more in-depth on a few topics and really understand them than to try to cover a little bit of everything each year.

I teach high school math, and it is really hard for me to teach kids how to solve an equation when they can't add 6+8, and it is hard to teach them to find the area of a hexagon if they don't know what one is. I think the elementary schools should focus on basic skills. Students shouldn't get out until they can add, subtract, multiply, and divide. I am willing to go from there. They don't have to have a background in the concept of solving equations when they start algebra 1, so don't try to teach it to them in elementary or junior high, just get some basic skills, and I will help them build from there.

In science, pick one broad topic for each year of elementary school and teach it every day. Students will get used to looking at the world and knowing that it relates to science, even if they don't understand how yet. If they can just get interested in it, they might do experiments on their own, and look up subjects they like. They will like science better and be more willing to learn the more technical aspects of chemistry and physics in high school.
References :
They should stop teaching kids to memorize facts, and instead focus on the process of science. Way too many people in this country reject the basics of science because they never really understood how science works. There are very simple experiments you can do to demonstrate the fundamental principles of science.
References :
Ban all tv. ban all video games. ban all ipods.

Extra time is not needed. If people before were able to learn in those hours then today's kids should be also.

parents need to get more involved. check that they did their homework. get angry at them for poor grades. spend more time when they are young with math drilling. force your kids to read more. buy them more educational orkbooks or educational games.

hire better teachers who are more skilled at the subjects and care enough. make it more appetizing to want to become a teacher.

let the schools provide tutors for those that struggle.
