It amazing when you go shopping and the people at the cash registers have no idea how much change to give.

EXACTLY! And if teachers dont have to teach math, then teachers shouldn’t have to learn math….right?

    There is no substitute for knowing how to actually do something, no matter what technology is available.

    We can’t use calculators for everything. We live in a complex technological society. If you decide in the future to pursue any job involving science or technology, you will need to be good at math.

    and what happens when the calculator is down. the calculator is just a tool. you should know what to do when the tool is broken

    i have been in stores that when the cash register with its built in adding machine was down the clerk couldn’t make change. because the clerk can’t make change the store looses a sale, and now has a frustrated customer. not good

    You have to learn the concepts.. otherwise, calculators will not help. For example, if you gave a 2nd grader this math problem:
    3x+5=6x+20

    and allowed him to use a calculator, he wouldn’t be able to come up with a correct answer because he would most likely have no idea how to approach the problem.

    they can’t always carry a calculator..

    i know i don’t all the time.
