Wow, I have never seen such a great response before.

Ok, I personally think that kids need to learn the concept behind every calculation, formula, etc first. It is true that no one carries calculator around unless you are either some kind of math freak or you cannot do any simple calculation using your mind (Sorry if I have offended anyone). You need to teach the kids the concept of addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. They need to understand first that one plus one totals up to two, and that when they finally understand it, then when it comes to calulation dealing with larger numbers, then calculator is the perfect tool.

And by the way, the worst case scenario is that the battery is dead when someone, who has been solely dependent on calculator, needs to compute something. lol

cause they need to know the conceps behind it to understand how they get that answer

if you didn't learn math then how would u know what formula to use??

    think about it

Then what's the point of concepts???

The calculator is just a tool to speed up calculations. Mathematics isn't just calculations

Sometimes you need to do math without a calculator. It also helps with an understanding of mathematics. I generally think that grownups are better at math without calculators than kids.

Because then the future would be full of people who don't understand the very basic concept of mathematics and number sense.

Lets say for instance you go to the store, you need to know if you're getting the correct amount of money back so you don't get cheated.
It's not like everybody carries calculators around with them to do simple mathematics like finding change.

Are you going to carry a calculator with you everywhere? What if you have "fat fingers" and hit a wrong button. How would you know if you did the procedure correctly without math? A calculator just speeds up the process, but you still need to know the process.

they need to learn the concept of it and they wont always have a calculator at hand. lets say they r in a store and they need to calculate something as simple as multiplication. wat r they gna carry around a pocket calculator everywhere?

Because i believe that without learning math, kids or grownups will not know how to use a calculator. My point of views is that for example, how can we solve the certain math problems with the calculator if we don't even know how to solve it?

You need to know what the operations mean. The way you
do that is to do it by hand. Mathematics is a kind of language,
and just as you have to read and write, you have to read and
write mathematics to learn that language.

The second part of this is that young people need to develop their
mental capacity, and doing arithmetic is one way of exercising
    the brain.

As you grow up you will find that the majority of math cannot be
done on machines. Real mathematician's mathematics, which is used
by everybody from people in business and finance, to people in the
sciences and engineering fields use advanced concepts of mathematics that are not things you find on a calculator.

Because nobody carries calculators around to make simple equations and learning mathematics develops their skills and abilities to problem solve.

Believe me, grownups don't use calculators for everything. It's been said, not everyone carries around a calculator for everyday life.

You really need to learn the basics because you need to be able to understand when you're getting a wring answer. The calculator (or a computer) is really only as smart as the person using it. If your calculator was broken and gives you wrong answers, how would you know if you don't know the basic math?

Also, for those of us who work with advanced math, we don't have computers or calculators that can do the advanced math… they're limited to adding and subtracting and other basic stuff, and basically, we know we're not going to get a right answer. But since we've learned math, we know *how* wrong our answer is.

Basically, you need to know math so you can use the calculator correctly.

    2. It is good for your growing and learning brain. Studies show that people who use their brains throughout their lives are less likely to get things like dementia and alzheimer's.

    3. Math makes you smarter. It is excersize for your mind. Just like in football, do you ever twist your arm up behind your head in the game? No, but you do it to stretch your body. Same for math.

    4. I DON'T use a calculator unless the numbers are huge. First, it's more pain than it's worth. I can solve it in my head or on paper in less time and effort than it takes me to locate, get, and use a calculator. Plus, I like making my brain work.

Advanced Math has many applications to science and technology. And if our kids don't learn the basics of math (without using a calculator) how can they expect to compete in a global economy for jobs in the natural sciences. The US economy will fall in industries in which it was once a leader. A more educated society is a more productive society. Doing mental math is a cognitive excersise that will help children to be smarter and more productive.

It is the problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills that the kids need to learn in order to function as an adult.

The more ways in which we can give our kids ‘safe’ problems to solve the more confident they will be about their own ability to trust and solve problems everyday. Math exercises are actually a great way to engage children, much like computer games. There is more than one way to solve a problem.

I’ve used the web to find online games and printouts to help my kids get comfortable with math concepts. They just go to our computer and open up an online binder that I put together for them and they do their exercises. It’s on a free website so I don’t have to buy software.

This binder has a cool website with an interactive multiplication game. here is the link and to find it click on the last tab of the binder.
