My kids love webkinz. You have to purchase a webkinz stuffed animal to get the code for the website but they are about $11-14 and they get a virtual pet to care for and there are a TON of kid-friendly games, a place called Quizzies that they can earn webkinz $ by answering questions on art/literature, math, science, etc. And the best part is that a parent can lock the chat feature so it is completely safe! http://www.webkinz.com

I have had good experiences with noggin.com ; nick.jr. and pbskids.org. Both of my boys (ages 7 & 4) can play on these sites. So far I haven't seen anything objectional or inappropriate on any of these.
