4th Grade Math – Any Ideas For Fun And Alternative Math Resources? Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set Puzzle, Math Tutor
Jan 292009

My 6 year old son wants to play on the computer and I don't want him playing gory shooter types games (the ones I like to play after he has gone to bed) but all the educational games are massively boring.

Any suggestions out there for fun games about reading and math?

Have you tried going for the classics? When I was a kid I LOVED Math Blaster and Oregon Trail. I realize those might not hold a lot of appeal for a 6-year-old in this day and age, though.

Because the real market in in entertainment, not education, so the programmers don't have the think that hard to come up with ideas for educational games.
I can't think of any that he'd be interested in.

Well if you can't find any good educational games then get him a few safe games like Sim City or, if they still have it, Reader Rabbit.

The JumpStart games are pretty fun when you click "skip" over some dialogue =)
Age ratings are there to protect your children. Don't get it if it's not suitable!! You should note that video gaming is a nice form of escapism: how is math relaxing?

Ask him to try http://www.gamerevolt.com or http://www.arcadekitty.com
Together they've got over 4000 games! I'm sure he won't be bored. My son practically lives on these sites. But at that age they do get bored quite easily. Teach him to read….

  10. Try Maths is fun. My 7 year old girl loves it. You can learn all kinds of things and it’s not dogy or too pushy. Try it. I think your son just might like it.

Unfortunately there aren’t that many fun educational games. Back in the day Number Munchers as a personal favorite…but now it seems games have gotten fancier and I feel like kids expect more.

We’ve been working on some educational games that both kids and adults can play together…but we’re really focusing on the fun side first so the game has taken us a little longer than we have liked.

Anyway, we’re hoping that once we launch that maybe our games might be what you are looking for for your child and yourself even.

Outlined some of these issues in a post we did on What’s Wrong with Educational Gaming
