    I think this will answer your question.

    I play a lot of video games, I think alot of it is preference but then within your chosen genera you need to offer fun gameplay. I would just remember what video games you really enjoyed, ones that were popular, Halo for shooters, Final Fantasy for RPGs look at those games and find what it was that made them so enthralling.
