I think a great way to make math fun is to tie it back to every day life. Use real world examples of how measurement, fractions, mathematical problems, algebra, etc. are used in everyday life. Fun Math Problem Having to Do With Quadratics!?

There is a pool with a sidewalk around it. The pool measures 6m by 10m, and the total area of the pool and walk is 96 square meters. What is the width of the sidewalk?

(6 + 2x) * (10 + 2x) = 96

<=>

60 + 12x + 20x + 4x² = 96

<=>

4x² + 32x – 36 = 0

<=>

x² + 8x – 9 = 0

Delta = 64 + 36 = 100

Sqr (delta) = 10

x = (-8 + 10) / 2 = 1

The width of the sidewalk is one meter.

Verification :

1 + 6 + 1 = 8

1 + 10 + 1 = 12

8 * 12 = 96 => ok

Can you find:
1. an object with a repeating pattern.
2. a sport that uses math and describe how the math is used, other than scorekeeping and timing.
3. advertisement using probability.
4. piece of wallpaper or wrapping paper that uses some type of transformation (reflection, rotation, translation, dilation)
5. someone saying they use math on his or her job.
6. a picture or any type of representation of an inequality.
7.an item related to factoring and explain the relationship.

I’ll do my best…

1. Pretty toilet paper

2. Pool / Snooker – It uses geometry

3. Showing certain adverts at certain times of the day like on tv because at those times the wanted audience is more likely to be watching.

4. Squared wallpaper – many lines of reflection

5. A banker uses maths…

6. If you made a bet with someone… like say ‘I bet the train will be here in under 5 minutes’… it could be represented by an inequality… in this case ‘t < 5 minutes’ where t represents time.

8. How about security on the internet where the use of mutiplying two really big prime numbers is used to protect peoples’ credit card numbers… I know it’s not an item but it’s the best I could do.

A small publishing company is planning to publish a new book. The production costs will include one-time fixed costs (such as editing) and variable costs (such as printing). The one-time fixed costs will amount to $50,924 . The variable costs will be $9.75 per book. The publisher will sell the finished product to bookstores at a price of $24.25 per book. How many books must the publisher print and sell so that the production costs will equal the money obtained from sales?

Breakeven number of units formula:

Fixed costs / ( selling price per unit – var costs per unit)

$50,924 / ( $24.25 – $9.75) = 3512 books to print and sell to breakeven.

Jenna walks 6 miles North and Danni 6 miles South. At the 6 mile mark, Jenna turns left and walks for 8 miles and so does Danni. Right at the 8 mile mark both Danni and Jenna stop. exactly How many miles is Jenna from Danni?
