Generosity is a good counterbalance to excessive craving for material gain. A program of systematic introspection to investigate the mental roots of craving and greed is useful as well. In addition, vigorous mindfulness in your daily activities can serve as a means to avoid unconscious impulses to greedy behavior.
References :
The easiest and simplest method is what had been taught by the Buddha. Follow the four noble truths, understand the twelve links, and practice the eight fold path. Mahatma Gandhi speaks about the twelve vows. which could also help. If you wish to go to the Upanishads, then it is going to be harder ways.
References :
Observe the thoughts, fully observe. This constant observance leads to the exposure of the minds patterns. Once the pattern is exposed, it can easily be let-go of. Only the mind is attached, and it can't hold anything here!
Peace and Blessings....
References :
you are among those who touch the real issues. see it here that you have recieved only a few answers.

i cite a few lines from my one article - the Yoga misunderstood so far... "In Pratyahar Yoga speaks of getting rid of the psychological addictions of senses. A mirror shows your image. It shows when you rose up from the bed in early morning, it shows when you are untidy, it shows when you comb hair, it shows you after your make up. It shows you all the times without any hesitation, without adding anything in you or subtracting from you. It has no hesitation of time, frequency or any other factor. You come in front of it and it shows you in return. No deference, no disdain; no temptation no escape simply a reflection. Yoga says your senses should reflect the world in the same way with No deference, no disdain; no temptation no escape simply a reflection of the world. This is Pratyahar."

this was your question how your mind can behave like a mirror which has not attachment, detachment, temptation or disdain to the objects. it simply reflects them as images.

being involved in money is not bad. being engaged in sex is not a prohibition, being busy in mirths of the world is not a taboo. what is wrong is to be involved therein as being sleeping.

Indian Yoga has told the way. Gurdjeif has told the way. Tibbetan Zen have told the way. there are many ways to get free from this attachment of senses.

i have collected some of the pearls on the pages of my website

you may go through the various articles over there and you will get a light in life - what is the name of the website.
May God bless you.

Try meditation and yoga -- contrary to popular belief, there is no religious element to this.
References :
One can learn to control ones mind. In fact, in the end, is there really anything OTHER than ones own mind that is truly our own to control? To release the attachment to the physical objects it helps if you have a really good disaster, like a flood. Or, you can give yourself a little change by ceasing to buy anything you are not going to eat that day. You probably have been feeling the effects of the mind control of consumerism. When you break that circuit of spending money on anything that you can't eat, you begin to see the consumer addiction we are all encouraged to have for what it is. Good luck!!
 ps, age helps too...
